SPEECH COACHES INFORMATION
Dear Speech Coach,
Welcome to Glenwood Community High School for the IHSSA district large group contest! We are excited to host district large group contest.
All special requests for performance times must be requested directly with Stacy: 515.401.1834. Phone message requests and email requests will not be considered. The IHSSA Director must visit directly with Stacy. If the line is busy, please call back. Contest Managers will not accept special requests. Special requests are for school-related events only. Family trips/ appointments/ personal conflicts are not special requests. District Large Group special requests are due directly to Stacy: January 9, 2025 by 4:00 PM.
Location: The contest will be held at 504 E. Sharp in Glenwood.
Parking: Buses should drop students off at the front entrance of Glenwood high and park behind the building in the staff parking lot off of Redbud Avenue.
Schedule: The schedule will be posted by Monday, January 20. Please be sure your students and their fans have your school code.
Be ready early: Please have your students ready to perform early. Plan on walking our building to figure out where the centers are located so you can be on time with your students and your guests. Inform audience members that centers may run early and to plan accordingly. We have a very busy day and full schedule, so waiting for groups, parents, or guests is not possible. I would advise spectators to arrive 30 minutes early to park and find your performance center. PLEASE have your performers & parents to the centers EARLY!
Noise: We know that speech participants are the best kids in the state but they can get noisy at times. Help out by supporting the “shhh-ers” with a supportive smile and a quiet response.
Cell phones: They must be on silent, not on vibrate.
Donation: Remind your supporters about the $5 suggested admission donation for the contest site. We will have greeters at the entrance collecting the donations and with schedule information.
Concessions: Please encourage your students and parents to eat at our high school. Concession sales are the main way to make money from hosting contest. Let your parents and students know we discourage bringing in outside food. We will have a wide variety of food for sale at reasonable prices.
Headquarters: The media center will serve as headquarters for coaches. Stop by to say hello & to provide your cell phone if you have not emailed it.
Ratings will be posted in the gym.
Schedule problems: If there are problems with the schedule, please email lawlerter@glenwoodschools.org and I will attend to it promptly. Send drops my way as well.
TV News and Short Film: We will provide a basic AV cart with extension cord. All other technological needs are up to your team to bring.
Risers: If you need risers for your choral reading or readers theatre, please email me by Monday, January 20.
Weapons: As per the December SWIFT: After conferring with our legal consul, the IHSSA has determined a method of dealing with the weapons issue in IHSSA contest series. It will be the duty of an individual school to write their particular contest site manager if they have a look-alike weapon in their contest selection. Then the local contest site will make the decision if they will allow the look-alike on stage or in the classroom according to their own district rules. An example would be: School B is doing a Choral Reading of the Old West. They will be wearing toy six shooters for each individual in the Choral Reading. School B must then write their local contest site manager and ask permission to use this look-alike weapon at that site. The contest site manager will then inform School B that it will be 1) allowed with no specifications, 2) allowed with specifications, or 3) will not be allowed.
One-Acts: We will have a stage manager and lighting person on hand. Light will be a simple stage wash with light up and down. Specials will not be an option. If you have a prop question, please email at Jeff DeYoung @ deyoungift@gmail.com. Unloading of one-act props may occur near door 3, the west side of the building.
Comment sheets: Please wait to pick up comment sheets until all ratings are posted. If you wish to leave before they are posted, leave a self-addressed, stamped envelope to have them sent. If you forgot your comment sheets, stop by the office and we will assist you. We are Southwest; it’s what we do!
It’s Iowa. It's January: Weather related information will be on our website and the IHSSA website. No decision will be made until at least 6:00 Saturday morning. The make-up date will be Monday, January 27 starting at 4:00 pm.
Photography: Photography and or videotaping are expressly forbidden.
We are thrilled to host you and your teams. Please let us know if you need anything; we want your day to be pleasant & successful.
