Term 3
This term in Maths, we will be exploring Number, Fractions, Financial Literacy, and Early Algebra through hands-on activities, games, and problem-solving.
We will learn about parts and wholes, including how to share objects fairly and recognise simple fractions such as halves and quarters. Students will explore how groups can be split into equal parts and use sharing strategies to solve problems.
We will also develop our financial literacy skills by learning about New Zealand coins and notes, recognising their values, and exploring how money is used in everyday situations.
Later in the term, we will investigate patterns and relationships. Students will identify, continue, and create patterns, explore how numbers change, and solve simple equations by finding missing numbers.
Through our learning, students will be encouraged to explain their thinking, use mathematical language, and build confidence as problem-solvers.

Maths Learning This Term
This term we are learning about numbers, counting, grouping, and measurement. We are building strong foundations in understanding how numbers work.
You can support your child at home by:
Counting forwards and backwards (start from different numbers)
Using everyday items to practise adding and taking away
Making groups (e.g. counting in 2s, sharing items)
Talking about measurement (long/short, heavy/light, full/empty)
Using time words like before, after, yesterday, and tomorrow
Most importantly, encourage your child to talk about their thinking—maths is everywhere!

Subitizing
Subitizing
Subitizing is the ability to quickly recognize how many objects are in a small group without having to count them one by one. It helps children develop number sense and strengthens their understanding of numbers and patterns.
Examples:
Seeing three dots on a dice and knowing it’s three without counting.
Recognizing two apples in a basket at a glance.
Noticing that four blocks are arranged in a square and instantly knowing there are four.
Spotting five fingers on a hand without counting each finger.
Activities to support subitizing could include dice games, dot cards, finger patterns, or even spotting shapes in the classroom.

We Are Learning To:
Count forwards to 20
Count backwards from 20
Count and form objects up to 5 and then 10
Recognise any numbers from 0 - 10
Say one number after & one number before
Instantly recognise patterns to 5
Write numbers up to 10
