Can marching band help me when I apply to college?
Yes — especially when a student sticks with it over time. Colleges often look for depth, consistency, teamwork, leadership, and follow-through in extracurriculars, so being involved in marching band throughout high school can show long-term commitment in a meaningful way.
What’s so fun about marching band?
Marching band is one of the most exciting parts of the music program. You get to perform, travel, build friendships, represent Glen Rock, and be part of something people actually see and hear.
Do I have to be an advanced player to join?
No! You literally can have no musical experience and we will teach you through the season! What matters most is a willingness to work, improve, and be part of the team.
What kinds of things do we do during the season?
Students can expect rehearsals, football games, competitions, and other performances throughout the season. It is a busy experience, but that is also what makes it fun, memorable, and rewarding.
What does it feel like to perform?
Performing with the full band on the field is exciting, high-energy, and something students remember for a long time. There is a big sense of pride that comes from building a show together and performing it for a crowd.
What kind of commitment is marching band?
Marching band is a real team commitment. Students are expected to attend rehearsals, performances, and major events, because everyone depends on each other for the group to succeed.
What if I have a conflict or need to miss something?
Families should communicate with Mr. Peterson as early as possible. Advance notice is important, but not every absence is automatically excused.
Can I do marching band and other activities too?
In some cases, yes. But once the marching band calendar is published, students and families should treat those dates seriously and plan around them as much as possible.
Why do students end up loving marching band so much?
Because it gives them a place to belong, a shared goal to work toward, and the feeling of being part of something bigger than themselves.
What if I play an instrument that’s not offered in the band? What would I play in marching band?
There are many opportunities within the marching band. Opportunities include playing in the percussion section, Color Guard (if you have an interest in dance or spinning flags!), as well as learning a brand new instrument. We’ll teach you everything you need to know and no experience is needed! You can continue to play your primary instrument as part of a curricular ensemble (band, orchestra, choir during the school day).
