Wiki-Based Third-Grade Language Arts Lesson Plan
Lesson Title: "Creating Our Class Story: Collaborative Writing with Wikis"
Objective: Students will collaborate to create a class story, practicing their writing skills and using technology to create a shared online document.
Materials Required:
Internet-enabled devices (computer, tablet)
Access to a classroom wiki platform
Activity:
Introduction (15 minutes): Start with a discussion about storytelling. What makes a good story? Who are some of your favorite characters, and why? Could you encourage students to share their ideas? Introduce the concept of a wiki and how it can be used for collaboration. (Richardson, 2015)
Setting up the Wiki (15 minutes): Demonstrate how to use the wiki software. Show students how to edit a page, add their thoughts, and save their work. Explain the rules of use: respectful language, constructive contributions, and consideration of others' work. (Kurt, 2020)
Story Starters (15 minutes): Guide the class in deciding the story's main characters, setting, and beginning. Make these first entries into the Wiki as a class.
Writing Time (20 minutes): Have students take turns adding sentences or paragraphs to the story on the Wiki. They can do this from their devices, and other students can see the story evolve in real Time. This is an exercise in creative writing, typing, and digital literacy. (Stauffer, 2020)
Discussion (15 minutes): Bring the class together to read the story aloud and discuss the process. How was writing as a group different from writing alone? What did they enjoy about using the Wiki?
Reflection and Next Steps (10 minutes): Ask students to reflect on their experience and think of ways they could use wikis for other school projects. Let them know that the class story wiki will be left open for further contributions and editing.
Assessment:
Assess students' participation in the discussion, contributions to the Wiki, and ability to use the technology. Look for creative thinking, cooperation, and digital literacy evidence in their work.
