June 2019
Dear 9th Grade Student,
The English department at Glen Ridge High School believes that summer reading is the best way for a student to continue the learning process, make transitions to new classes, and improve standardized test scores. Therefore, we are requiring that you read a book of nonfiction, Unbroken (The Young Adult Adaptation): An Olympian's Journey from Airman to Castaway to Captive by Laura Hillenbrand. While we know that this book was turned into a film, the film does not succeed in capturing the inspiring and complete journey of the story’s subject, Louis Zamperini. This book will serve as a strong introduction to our curriculum’s focus on journeys, heroes, and dreams.
Additionally, you will be receiving an assignment on Move-Up Day to complete while reading. This assignment will also be available on Google Classroom. If you have any questions, I can be reached at gdandrea@glenridge.org.
Enjoy your summer!
Sincerely,
Genine D'Andrea
