During your child's first year of schooling in mathematics they will be learning to:

  • Count, read & write with the numbers from 1-10.

  • Count forwards to 10.

  • Count backwards from 10.

  • Say the number after (range 1-10).

  • Say the number before (range 1-10).

  • Form and write digits 1- 10.

  • Order numbers to 10.

  • Counting sets (groups) to 10

  • Counting numbers to 20



  • Use the correct measurement language when sorting objects.

  • Identify common measurement tools.

  • Compare 2 objects being measured.

  • Compare 2 lengths being measured.

  • Compare lengths.

  • Order objects by lengths and weight.

  • Recognise basic 2D(plane) shapes by sight and name.

  • Describe the position of an object [in relation to another object].

  • Sort objects by appearance (shape, colour, size).

  • Sort objects using everyday language.

  • Interpret data from pictographs.

  • Make pictographs.

  • Make block graphs.

As you can see above, your child will be placed in a small group of children for our mathematics sessions. These children are placed in the same group as they are working at a similar ability level in mathematics. It is important to note that children develop at different rates.
