American author and Vietnam veteran, Tim O'Brien, once stated: "Storytelling is the essential human activity. The harder the situation, the more essential it is."
Stories show us the world... but they also allow us to show the world who we are. Thus, our mission is to train every member of the GBN Speech Team in the art of storytelling--whether students are performing a monologue, reading a poem, or defending an argument in a persuasive speech.
Students have many options of performance categories that they can choose to focus on: persuasive or informative public speaking, current events focused and limited preparation speaking, humorous or dramatic acting scenes and monologues, original comedic performances, poetry or prose reading, and more.
Please see our team resource page for detailed event descriptions and past recorded performances from Nationals and/or State competitions.
To quote Tim O'Brien once more, he shared in an interview these powerful words: "I know what it is to feel unloved, to want revenge, to make mistakes, to suffer disappointment, yet also to find the courage to go forward in life."
Our words have the ability to reveal truth and inspire courage. It is our hope that through speaking, performing, and storytelling, GBN Speech Team members will experience this uplifting power of the human language.
