Chess Team & Club
1st Semester 2024-25: Practices every Tuesday after school in the library from 3:15 pm to until 4:15pm (on Tuesdays that we have school).
Play for chess for fun during PLC in the library. Arrive at the start of PLC, scan in and remain until the end.
Online practice on most Thursdays at 7pm via Zoom for team members.
The GEHS Team & Club is directed by Coach Chris Aderhold, a member of the science department at Glenbard East. We offer two levels of commitment: Club Membership, for those with a general interest in chess. Team Membership is for those who wish to represent our school at competitive scholastic chess tournaments.
Glenbard East High School is the home of the RAMS. Which stands for our motto: Right Attitude Means Success.
The chess team competes in the Upstate Eight Conference and in the IHSA State Tournament Series. We also host our own annual tournaments such as the Aries Team Tournament, and the Ram Invitational. We also co-host the Glenbard Classic.
In Illinois, a high school chess team consists of eight players. They each play against eight players of an opposing team according to individual strength. The tougher the board, the more points it is worth. This format is an exciting departure from the classic individual approach to chess competitions.
Please view the "Parents & Student" page for detailed information about joining the team & club, practice & tournament schedule, and expectations.
We host several chess competitions each year. Please click on our "Competitions @ East" link above for information about various events, directions and parking.
We are honored to host the annual clinic presented by the Illinois Chess Coaches Association. Please view the "Coaching Clinic" page for specifics on the schedule, format and ticket sales.
