GHS Ski Racing
Boys and Girls Ski Race Team Can/Food Drive
Hi folks, something I started last year that I'd like to do with every team I coach once during their season is to do something charitable. I would hope that many of you realize how fortunate we are but that there are others in our community who are not so fortunate. The captains this year have decided that we as a team will have a Can/Food Drive. This is something that we are not doing "outside" of our team by setting up a table in a parking lot or something similar. We are only asking ski race team members (and their families if possible) to bring in anything they can that we will collect and donate locally. As our last race is next Wednesday and we have practice next Monday- those are the two days I'd ask if you can bring something in, please do and I will collect them at the bus. You are not being judged by your ability or inability to participate, we are only trying to give back to our community in a small way. Below is a partial list of items that are normally collected at such efforts. Thank you in advance for anything you may be able to contribute. Coach Zelek

CISL
The Ski Racing League we belong to is the CISL - Connecticut Interscholastic Ski League. This league is totally separate from any other high school sports league here at GHS. Click on the link below to access their site for the schedule, race results and other league information.
Helmet Recommendation
The CISL recommends all racers to wear helmets that meet the following criteria: CISL Helmet Must have hard ear protection.
Each racer on the team purchases an RFID card and signs our ticket waiver for the season. Every time the team trains or races, a ticket is loaded onto the RFID card of each racer.
Parent creates an account here using their name and information.
Everyone should select the $5 waiver and say they have a reloadable card.
Parent adds their racer(s) onto the account as an associate. (if the racer is 18 or older – adult racer - they create their own account).
Parent (or adult racer) purchases a media card for the racer (hence their associate) and signs the waiver here.
Coach sends in the excel spreadsheet with only the names of the racers who will be here, every visit. Cards will be loaded with a ticket.
The RFID cards belong to the individual racer.
If the racer loses or forgets their card, they will be responsible for a $5 replacement at Guest Services at the mountain.

Tentatively our schedule during the season will be:
Dryland physical conditioning begins at GHS either inside or outside depending on the weather early in December. We meet usually 2-3 days a week (possibly Monday, Wednesday and/or Thursday) from approximately 2:15-4:00 each day. In January our series of 5 races start and we travel to Mount Southington usually 2-3 times a week. Mondays are often practice days on the race hill with races or additional practices Wednesday and/or Thursday. We usually arrive back at GHS from Mount Southington between 6-7pm. The team normally has an optional sandwich program where custom grinders, drinks and chips are supplied for the ride back to GHS. For transportation we do not use school buses but rather coach buses because of the storage needed for ski equipment. Our season normally ends depending on the weather and possible postponements in early - mid February. There are actually two teams (boys/girls) that max out at 20 athletes each for a total of 40.
These days may change because of conflicts or cancellations, check your email for information. All communication is done through your school email address. Parents/Guardians have the option of joining our email contact list so that they may get timely notification of any schedule changes or postponements.
There is a $90 fee required to be paid by each athlete to the CISL (Ski Racing league) for the administration and running of the races at Mount Southington. Make checks out to “GHS Varsity Club” and put “Ski Racing and athlete's name” in the “memo” section. Submit checks by December 20th to Coach Zelek. If there is more than one ski racer in a family, separate $90 checks must be submitted for each athlete.
