Dates to Remember

School-to-Home Connection

Click on the document to the right for the  January Star of the Day monthly activity.  Star sharing will begin on Monday, January 8th.

We have two new units beginning in Reader's Workshop and Phonics with Mabel. The two units fit "Tongue and Groove-" Super Powers and Word-Part Power! Students will strengthen their  reading strategies (SUPER POWERS)  to solve unknown words. They will learn short vowel word parts and new snap words. You will see a lot of reading growth this month! It is very exciting!

Also, students will begin to bring home leveled books this month in a reading folder.  The books that go home will be ones they have practiced over and over again  both with me and independently. SNAP Word Book A (red) went home in early December. Once your child has practiced them and you feel as though they know them, please have your child return the book to school to read with me. Once they master each level book, the next level will go home.

Your child will receive a formal assessment on their reading level and their sight word knowledge this month. The goal for kindergarten students is to be on level D  (Blue dot books) by the end of the school year.  Practicing Snap words at home is important work to help your child progress in reading.  In addition to snap words, your child may need review of their letter sounds. Thank you for your help at home!

During Writer's Workshop, the students will be starting a new unit as well-Writing for Readers. In this unit, students will practice storytelling using their own experiences and writing in more conventional ways. At this point of the year, it is expected that students generate 1-3 sentences while using spaces and spelling some snap words correctly in their work.

During math, students will be working on the “tricky” teens this month. We define the tricky teens as ten and some more. For example, 13 is equal to a group of ten and three more. These numbers are tricky because you have to read it from right to left instead of left to right like the rest of the numbers in our number system. For example, for the numbers 23, 24, 25, etc., we read the the number in the tens place and then the ones place, unlike teen numbers.  Also, at home, you can practice counting to 50.  Students will also be using additon strateiges to five and work on math facts within 5.
