Ouchijuku is located in Shimogo town in Fukushima, and it was known for being used as a post town by travellers in the Edo period. This festival celebrates the unique and preserved history of Ouchijuku, in the beautifully snowy and wintery scenery. This Festival is relatively young, since it started in 1983, making it also not as popular as other longer ongoing festivals in Tohoku. However, it is also a very interesting and unique experience, so people do still visit it. The town contains 33 buildings, and the festival takes place every second weekend of Febuary.

There are a lot of characteristics to the Ouchijuku Snow Festival, with fireworks, snow lanterns, music and snowy rooftops setting an amazing atmosphere for any visitor to be able to enjoy. As it is a cultural festival, there are also a lot of local cultural activities. These could range from taiko drums and period costume contests, to eating Negi (leek) soba noodles, which is eating soba noodles with a leek instead of chopsticks.

Even though the Ouchijuku Snow Festival might be relatively young in terms of traditional festivals, what it celebrates is actually extremely rich in history and heritage. It celebrates a beautiful Edo period town, with amazing architecture and its perseverance. While it is extremely culturally rich, this festival is also extremely beautiful, with the snowy rooftops of the traditional buildings being shown upon at night by hand-made snow lanterns and fireworks. It is a unique and beautiful experience that anyone who has the chance should see. The small scale of the festival also makes the atmosphere feel very unique and cozy, in addition to the snow and fireworks building up an amazingly beautiful atmosphere.
