The pride and joy of Noda people
Marine Rose (Rhodonite) is a rare pink gemstone found along the Sanriku Coast in Noda Village, Iwate Prefecture, Japan. Mining in the region started in the late 19th century, when the first and biggest manganese mine in Japan had been created. During the mining procces, Marine rose was discovered.
In the late 20th century, as regional tourism began to develop and interest in local crafts grew, craftsmen in Noda saw an opportunity to turn Marine Rose into a symbol of the village’s identity. Using traditional Japanese jewelry-making techniques and locally sourced materials, local artists began crafting rings, pendants, and amulets from the stone. It was given the name “Marine Rose” to reflect both its marine origin and its rose-like coloration.
