Horowasan no Shimotsuki Kagura is one of the most important intangible folk cultural properties (1977), which has a history of more than 1200 years in Yokote City in Akita Prefecture. It takes place on 7-8 November each year to celebrate the harvest and to hope for a bumper crop the next year.
(Ike, 2023)
Horowasan was called Horowasan Tennouji, and it has a heart of ancient gosh who were worshiped by the founders and mountain ascetics. It still retains traditional worship styles and leaves the spiritual culture.
Here is another world that is full of nature. The forest of history and worship, where you want to visit serenely.

In this event, 33 Shinto Ritual dances are performed throughout the night. This Kagura is assigned to Yudate Kagura, and Shinto priests will give the Kagura overnight in the shrine of the presiding priest. This Kagura consists of 33 Shinto spiritual dances. Horowa no mai (the dance of Horowa), which is Miko no mai (the dance of the shrine maiden), conveys the original shrine maiden, which is called nyokan.

During the performance of Shimotsuki Kagura, you can enjoy both dance and music performances. The history of this Kagura is so long. Horowasan no Shimotsuki Kagura is a traditional ritual performance more than 1200 years. Since the history of this Kagura dates back so far, you may feel the traditional and ancient atmosphere of the ritual.
I thought it should be preserved and passed down to future generations. However, when I asked some acquaintances from Yokote City, they did not know about the festival, and they had not even heard the name of the festival. I was so shocked by that and thought it would be so challenging to protect this traditional art in the future. The first step we need to take is to spread the recognition of their traditions and foster the sense of preservation among young people.
I have never experienced festivals in other prefectures except Fukuoka, so I want to visit indigenous events during my stay in Akita. And I hope this website will contribute to the preservation of Akita's traditions!
