Tomine Hōtoku Bangaku is said to have begun in 1793. It is said to have been brought to Tomine by rafters from Kawai Village, Kitaakita City (currently located near Aikawa). The area, including Tobine and the surrounding village of Hatate, eventually became Tomine Village after a merger of villages during the Meiji period. This Bangaku also became Tomine Hōtoku Bangaku.

Tomine Hōtoku Bangaku is performed with various dances accompanied by drums and flutes. There are over a dozen different pieces in total. The program includes Aramai (荒舞), Torimai (鳥舞), Senzaimai (千歳舞), Okinamai (翁舞), Sanbasomai (三番叟舞), Asamemai (朝飯舞), Hataorimai (機織舞), Warabiorimai (蕨折舞), Shiokumimai (汐汲舞), Suzukimai (鈴木舞), Sagurimai (さぎり舞), Yamanokamimai (山ノ神舞), Mizu no Ogi (水の扇), Ebisumai (恵比寿舞), Daikokumai (大黒舞), and Mishimabushi (三嶋節).
[Aramai]
Aramai is a dance characterized by its fast tempo and powerful energy. Rather than moving widely across the stage, the dancers are primarily stationed in the center. It remains lively and constantly in motion, allowing for a rich range of movement even within the limited space. Even among the quick movements, there are moments when the dancers pause. This creates a striking contrast between rapid and slow movements.
[Shiokumimai]
The Shiokumi Dance has a slightly slower rhythm than the Aramai Dance, but there are sections where the movements speed up. This creates a beautiful contrast between stillness and movement. While the overall emphasis is on elegance, the dance is structured with moments of power and intensity.
[Common Features between the two above]
A common feature of both styles is the distinctive stepping technique, which uses the knees to keep rhythm. The dancer constantly and precisely moves his knees and legs. This creates a flowing footwork throughout the dance.

When I first saw Tomine Hōtoku Bangaku, I was amazed by the dynamic and light movements. The dancers' constant movements in the center of the stage were powerful even through the screen, and I felt strongly the high level of physicality that Bangaku has. In every dance, the knees and feet are constantly moving. However, while I was creating this digital archive, I realized that there were not many young people on stage. To pass on traditional performing arts to future generations, a younger generation is essential. Then, I found an event called Children's Folk Performing Arts Presentation in Noshiro City. This is an event where elementary, junior high, and high school students from Noshiro City, who have studied traditional folk performing arts in the region, can perform their dances. I felt that the local community providing such an opportunity is very meaningful. I also think that it will attract the interest of other children and young people. I hope that many people will be able to appreciate Tomine Hōtoku Bangaku, as well as the characteristics of this region.
