Bunsyokan is the former Yamagata Prefectural Office, which construction started soon after the current Yamagata prefecture got established in 1877. However, with the Great Yamagata City Northern Fire occurred in May 1911, the whole buildings were destroyed, but got the immediate repair by June 1916. The building is known for its retro English & Renaissance style with the beautiful brickworks, and functioned as the Prefectural Office until 1975.
After Bunsyokan finished its duty as the Prefectural Office in 1975, Yamagata prefecture decided to preserve the building as a cultural asset. In December 1984, Bunsyokan was officially designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan.
With the wish of Yamagata prefecture, wanting to pass down its valuable cultural heritage aligned with deepening the Yamagata citizens' understand of their hometown and promoting the prefecture's culture, the former prefectural office got revitalized as "Yamagata Prefectural Museum of Local History" on October 1, 1995, which nicknamed as "Bunsyokan".
Today, Bunsyokan is open for the public, where people can freely explore the beautiful structure of the building, while learn about the history of Yamaga prefecture and Bunsyokan itself.

I went to Yamagata prefecture with my mother in March 2024, and it was our first time visiting there. We rented a car to drive around Yamagata, where we were really looking forward to visiting Bunsyokan. When we first saw Bunsyokan from the car window, we were amazed by its scale, a very big and beautiful structure with brickwork! I felt like I was somewhere in Europe! For people who like to take photos, you will love it for sure, because there were so many places with beautiful scenery, and I also took my camera with me and couldn't stop releasing the shutter! I really recommend you visit Bunsyokan if you have any chance of visiting Yamagata prefecture, where you get to walk around the beautiful retro building, learning about the history of the prefecture and its buildings.
