Pre-algebra classes will begin Topic 2 this week, which covers solving equations. To prepare for this chapter, the students practiced one-step equations last week. They will now start solving equations with more steps, such as combining like-terms, moving variables to one side, and the distributive property. The algebra class will continue Module 3 this week, which covers relations and functions. The students will practice evaluating functions in function notation and identify linearity/continuity of functions. Then they will take a CFA over the first 3 lessons of this chapter.
10/20-10/24
Students will begin learning how authors convince readers--using ethos, pathos, logos, etc. We will examine various advertisements to see those strategies in action. Students will then begin applying those strategies in their own writing where they work to convince the "committee" that they deserve to be saved from the zombie apocalypse!
As we begin 2nd quarter, we will begin grading students' IXL progress each Week--we expect that students will have completed 2 skills and earned a 100 smart score. Students have 25 minutes in CAP class weekly and at least 10 minutes in ELA on Tuesdays and Thursdays to complete these activities.
(10/20 - 10/24)
We are continuing to work on our Magnetic Fields unit in which your student scientists must help the Space Agency to solve a problem with their Magnetic Spacecraft Launcher. In the upcoming Chapter, the students will evaluate the strength of scientific evidence, explain key concepts with computer simulations, and construct scientific arguments using evidence.
Next week in Social Studies, we’ll explore the exciting and challenging life of the American West! Students will learn about boomtowns, ghost towns, mining, cowboys, and the Homestead Act to understand how people sought new opportunities on the frontier. Through primary sources, maps, and activities, we’ll analyze how westward expansion brought both growth and conflict. Our essential question will guide us: How did the westward expansion affect Native Americans?
We have been spending some time working on our writing skills. Students have filled out graphic organizers to help structure their writing and then assembled a paragraph response based on what we read. They are continuing to complete their segments in Read 180 and are actively working on their second one. For our Social Studies lessons, we are currently talking about the Bill of Rights and the first Presidents.
