WELCOME TO 6TH GRADE!!

*This page is under construction*

Hello 6th Grader!

As you would expect, this has been a fun but busy summer preparing for you in the fall. We can’t WAIT to get the school year kicked off! There are a few things you should know as A LOT has changed from what you might have expected 6th grade to be!

  1. The schedule has TOTALLY changed!

The 6th-8th graders are now on the same schedule. You will have each of the following classes every day:

  • Language Arts with Mrs. Hallberg

  • Math with Mrs. Lechman

  • Science with Mr. Harte

  • Social Studies with Mr. Harte or Mrs. Hallberg

Band & Specialists:

  • Band will be with Mr. Frozene.

  • The specialist rotations will be what the students are used to from 5th grade. They will rotate around in a six day schedule and see the following teachers: Mrs. Kammeyer/ Mrs. Covey in Library/ Media. Mrs. Dahlberg in Art. Ms. Arnold in Music. Mr. Czeck (sounds like “zeck”) in phy. Ed.

Here is what the schedule will look like next year. Students can check PowerSchool for more information. Schedules will be handed out during open house which is Tuesday, August 23 from 4:00-6:00 pm!

Students will be with their “homeroom” group of students in their specialist class. Students will have different schedules and will not travel to and from class with the same group of students.

  • 8:14-9:14- 1st Period

  • 9:15-9:30- 6th - 8th Grade BREAKFAST

  • 9:32-10:32- 2nd Period

  • 10:34-11:35- 3rd Period- This will be 6th grade's specialist time

  • 11:38-11:50- 6th - 8th Grade ADVISORY

  • 11:50-12:28- 6th-8th Grade LUNCH

  • 12:31- 1:29- 4th Period- Band if you are signed up for it

  • 1:32- 2:31- 5th Period

  • 2:34-3:33- 6th Period

  1. Advisory

Above, you see that there is an advisory time. This will be a 12 minute ‘check in’ with a teacher and small group of kids daily. This group will be grades 6th-8th. You will keep you advisory teacher through 8th grade. New 6th graders will be added every year as the 8th graders go to the high school. This is not a study hall but more of a check in with grades, work ethic, etc. Possible advisory teachers are: Ms. Hoeft, Mrs. Myers, Mr. Hallberg, Mr. Hammer, Mrs. Lee, Mrs. Lechman, Mr. Harte, Mrs. Hallberg, Mrs. Lund, Mrs. Gunderson, and Mrs. Olson.

  1. Communication

With the change in schedule all parent communication will need to go through the office- this is for appointments, if your child is riding home with someone else, etc.

If you have a question about how your child is doing in a specific class you will need to contact that teacher directly as your child homeroom teacher won’t have knowledge of that.

  1. Money

All fees should be paid in the office:

  • Planner fee- $4

  • Lunch/ Breakfast Account money

    • Lunch Costs: $2.55 daily

    • Breakfast Costs: $1.35 daily

  • NOTE:

    • Milk is $0.35 daily - this needs to be brough in cash every time they take one

    • Students can bring a snack or have something in their lockers to eat at breakfast time.

  1. Lockers

All backpacks and materials are to be kept in lockers. There is a three minute passing time between classes to get what is needed. Obviously, we will help you at the start! You are expected to stop at your locker between classes to drop off and pick up what is needed! *During open house, you will want to get your locker organized! There are a few students who will have lockers with a combination lock! (Don’t worry, we will help you will that, too!)

  1. Don’t forget school starts EARLY on Thursday, August 25!

  1. 6th Grade Website: https://sites.google.com/gk12.net/gms-6th-grade/ - BOOKMARK!

Last year we used this website to communicate with parents instead of a newsletter. We will keep this going this year!

  1. Chromebooks!

6th graders will be in charge of bringing their Chromebooks home and charging them nightly- more info to come. The majority of work that needs to be done will be done on Chromebooks.

  1. PowerSchool

PowerSchool is an invaluable tool for parents of middle schoolers. If you don’t already, contact the GMS office for help in getting a username/ password with access to your child’s grades. It will even send weekly emails if you want that option! Any child you have in grades 4-12 can be on the same login.

Please let us know if you have any questions! Keep checking PowerSchool to see when your schedule is posted!

Thank you!
