The school health program facilitates the healthy growth and development of the students. The program prevents and detects health problems, and maintains and improves the health status of students. The services provided to the students are, state mandated health screenings at specified intervals, nursing services including the treatment of acute and chronic conditions, first aid, medication administration, health counseling and health prevention, maintenance of student health records and assessment for school immunizations. Our goal is to assist and encourage all students to stay healthy and safe so they can be successful in school. Health appraisal is the foundation of the program and is mandated by the Pennsylvania Department of Health.

Health appraisal:

  • Children will receive the following mandated school health appraisals:

1. Medical exam - given on school entry, sixth and eleventh grade

2. Dental exam - given on school entry, third and seventh grade

3. Hearing screen - given yearly in Kindergarten, first, second, third, seventh and eleventh grade

4. Vision screen - given yearly at each grade level

5. Scoliosis ( lateral back curvature) - given in sixth and seventh grade

6. Growth screen - given yearly to all grade levels

*Defects found on these examinations will be reported to parents/guardians. Every effort should be made to correct them.

PA School Immunization Requirements - Effective August 2017

Children of ALL grades (K-12) need the following immunizations for attendance:

  • 4 doses of tetanus, dipththeria and acellular pertussis (1 dose on or after the 4th birthday)

  • 4 doses of polio (1 dose on or after the 4th birthday and at least 6 months after the previously given dose)

  • 2 doses of measles, mumps, rubella

  • 3 doses of Hepatitis B

  • 2 doses of varicella (chickenpox) or evidence of immunity

7th thru 12th Grade ADDITIONAL immunization requirements for attendance:

  • 2 doses of meningococcal conjugate vaccine (MCV). First dose given at 11-15 years of age and 2nd dose is required at age 16 or entry to 12th grade. If dose one was given at 16 years or older, only one dose is required.

  • 1 dose of tetanus, diphtheria, acellular pertussis (Tdap)

*Exemptions to the school law for immunizations:

  • Medical reasons

  • Religious Beliefs

  • Philosophical/strong moral or ethical conviction
