Our new focus is monitoring our reading and attempting to self-correct.
While reading they should be asking themselves:
- Does my reading look right? (phonics)
- Does my reading sound right? (grammar)
- Does my reading make sense? (meaning)
To Help at Home
Ask them "Were you right?" as well as questions specific to the error to draw their attention the above monitoring.

++++++++++++++
We will continue to blend letters together to help decode unknown words.
We are starting with beginning blends of words (example: br-, tr-, cr-, bl-, cl-, etc.) and visually looking at the whole word to blend all the sounds together. The first step is to completely vocalize each letter and then put it together to read the whole word. The second step is to subvocalize each letter sound and then read the whole word aloud. The final step is to quick read the whole word without having to say each letter sound.
To Help at Home
When reading at home have your child mask unknown words to show themselves the letters letter by letter and then blend it into the whole word. It is very important that after difficulty, they need to go back to the beginning of the sentence and reread to leave the sentence smooth and check for meaning. (This step helps support their comprehension of the text.)
See the link below for additional ways to help your child decode unknown words.
