Quote of the day...
MS/HS Math & Science| 7th Science | 8th Algebra 1 | 9th Biology
Mr. Pottberg enters his third year teaching at Ascent Classical Academy, where he instructs students from 7th through 9th grade in the subjects of science and mathematics. His classroom philosophy is built on one simple principle: “Strength rejoices in the struggle.” He believes growth can only come at the price of lifting something heavy — and that students who trust the process and lean into difficult challenges will surprise themselves with what they're capable of achieving if they stay the course.
He holds a degree in Biology and Secondary Education from CMU, and brings nearly a decade of classroom experience to his teaching. Before reentering education at Ascent, he spent thirteen years working as a QC Chemist for TotalEnergies — an experience that gives him a unique perspective on how mathematical and scientific thinking connects to the real world.
Outside the classroom, Mr. Pottberg is a technology guru who builds his own computers and codes custom software for them. He is an avid fan of board, card, and digital games alike, and helps run Ascent Classical Academy’s Chess Club. He also has a fondness for the theater arts, having performed in multiple productions as a student himself. He enjoys live productions whenever he can attend. Finally, he is an accomplished student-athlete, winning the prestigious San Deigo CIF Championship for his weight class his senior year. He brings that same competitive drive and spirit that lead him to gold on the mat to all his extracurricular and teaching pursuits.
GET TO KNOW ME
My father was in the Navy. I moved a lot as a kid, and lived in California, Colorado, Texas, Virginia, Maine, Florida, and Arkansas. Seven!
Cyrano De-Bergerac. I read it in high school, just like our students still do today! I also have a copy of it that is nearly 100 years old. I like to collect very old copies of my favorite books.
I really loved history class. History is all about good story telling, which can enrich our understanding of the past, and help guide our path through the future.
When I am not working in my home lab building computers, I like to spend time outside at many of the beautiful Colorado National parks where I enjoy hiking and fishing with my dog Jake!
