Tangaroa - God of the Sea

Tangaroa, deity of the ocean, son of Rangi and Papa and a source of life. Tangaroa provided food and transportation to the Maori ; he was not always so peaceful and calm though. Rangi his father was the atua of the sky and Papatuanuku his mother was atua of the earth. When Tangaroa, was a child him and his brothers had never seen daylight, they lived inside rangi and papas eternal embrace. Then finally one day the kids decided to separate their parents, Tane mahuta one of Tangaroa's brothers lay on his back and pushed so hard is Rangi drifted up to the heavens and became the sky father and papa became the earth mother. Tangaroa took to the sea and became the deity of the ocean. Ever since then he has been helping the world by providing important resources.
