A 504 plan is an agreement between the school district and the student's family regarding how the school will provide support and/or remove barriers to learning for students with a disability that is not covered under IDEA 2004. There are two requirements for a student to qualify for a 504 plan as outlined in Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. The first is that the student has any disability covered within Section 504, and the second is that the disability creates a barrier for the student to learn in a general education classroom. Unlike a federally recognized disability covered under IDEA 2004, this is not an Individualized Education Program (IEP), but, rather, a plan that describes the specific accommodations the student will receive, who is providing those services, and who is in charge of overseeing that those accommodations are being implemented. These plans may be reviewed yearly, reevaluated every three years, or reevaluated after a school-related transition or special environment placement.
