The first step when preparing for the a makerspace ELO is to decide who will lead students as they work on tasks associated with the makerspace. Once this person is established then they will decide what is the best format for the after school sessions. There are two ways to bring makerspace to your students. One way is to use the TMC trailer or to use materials in your building's own makerspace. Once determined, the building coordinator will submit a proposal for either the trailer or their building makerspace (found below). The building level coordinator will be notified if their proposal is approved and then specific information will be shared on logistics of what is needed for their event such as materials, pay requests, etc.
If you request use for the makerspace trailer, when the TMC trailer arrives at your building, it will be parked in a location that your building principal has determined to be an out of the way location but still visible to build hype. In order to keep the technology that is on the trailer safe and protected from harsh temperatures, we ask that you place the Ozobots and the iPads in your building so they can be locked up and easily charged.
For whichever route you are bringing makerspace to your building, please use the forms for signing students up. Please locate your building's form and edit it for your current needs. If you do not see a form for your building, simply make a copy of another buildings form and make it your own.
The most important piece of the experience is to establish what you want the students at your school to do with the TMC lab. Every building is different and has its own desires as to what they want to do when it comes to STEM related materials and experiences. Therefore, you are encouraged to think about your building and what works best for it. This process is not cookie cutter and we want something that fits the unique learners of your building. To get started with brainstorming visit the resources page to see the ever growing list of ideas.
When determining whether you need the trailer or your own makerspace, please look at the inventory below to see what the trailer has as well as what your own building has for materials.
Remember you also are not limited to using makerspace items during just the afterschool time. You may use items during the day. The one request we have is to be mindful of the consumable items. Please don't waste and if your building has things in their supply (such as paper, pipe cleaners, etc.) please use those so the trailer items are there for those/events who do not have items available.
As students complete tasks, you are encouraged to showcase their work in a variety of ways. Show off through your school Facebook and Twitter pages using #MakerspaceGIPS. If you have accomplished something you feel really amazing, contact Kelli Mayhew to get further publicity. You may even consider hosting a makerfaire night at your school to showcase what students create.
Although it is sad to say it is true that you will have to send the lab on its way to another school. However that doesn't mean this style of learning needs to stop. We hope you continue to do makerspace projects in your building and advocate for resources of your own from either PTO, Foundation Mini Grants, EdBacker, etc. to grow your own collection.
When you are finished, we ask that if you used the trailer, you organize it and return all materials and technology to it and prepare everything to be hauled. Lock the trailer and turn in the keys to Jason Weseman. You may log all your hours you worked with students as well as up to 2 hours for planning and prep.
Whether you used the trailer or your own makerspace, please make sure to submit all pay requests as soon as possible to Christine Kolar (cakolar@gips.org). If you purchased any materials and wish to be reimbursed, please also submit these receipts to Christine as well so you can be reimbursed.
Below are pay sheets for you and your assistant. If your assistant is a teacher they will just fill this out for the standard rate of either planning or working with kids. If your assistant is a para then they will need to list their hourly pay at the bottom. You may log all your hours you worked with students as well as up to 2 hours for planning and prep on one sheet. When done sign and send to Christine Kolar (cakolar@gips.org). Please note on the activity description at the top if this is for the makerspace trailer or for the one in your building as they come from different funds.
