About Our Counseling Program

I little about Ms. Strick

Hello,  My name is Jackie Strick.  I am the new Gilman PreK-12 School Counselor and the CARES Mental Health Counselor (Counseling for All to Reach Emotional Success).  I worked in Gilman on Tuesday's during the 2022-2023 school year.  This year my days in Gilman are Tuesday's, Wednesday's and Thursday's.  I am very happy to be working as a school counselor again as I love to teach.  I retired from the Medford School District in May of 2022, after being their middle school counselor for 25 years.  I also taught Physical Education, Health and Adaptive Physical Education for the Loyal School district for seven years from 1991-1998.

I enjoy any activity that is outdoors.  I love to travel near or far, just as long as it is a new place to learn about and experience.  I have two adult children.  Dain is a mechanical Engineer and works in Eau Claire and Lauryn is a student at UWEC in Business / Marketing.  I also have a little dog named Nellie, that is a Teddybear breed.  She is a cutie and makes me laugh.

My passions in school are:  People helping people, working with mental health of students, teaching life related developmental guidance lessons in the classrrooms, being a safe person for the students at Gilman to count on in their school day, being a good role model for the students and striving for all the people in school to live by the following  motto:  TREAT EVERYONE YOU MEET WITH KINDNESS for EVERYONE YOU MEET IS FIGHTING A GREAT BATTLE.  (be kind because you do not know what they deal with outside of school)

If you would like to talk with me, I welcome you to call or email me.

The 7 Mindsets SEL curriculum is a whole-school focused curriculum. All students 4K-12 will be learning this curriculum. There will be one lesson per week, each lesson contains a developmentally appropriate ice breaker, video, discussion and activity. The 7 Mindsets are as follows:

#1: Everything is Possible

#2: Passion First

#3: We Are Connected

#4: 100% Accountable

#5: Attitude of Gratitude

#6: Live to Give

#7: The Time is Now

This curriculum targets ten SEL competencies for students. This includes self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, decision-making, resilience, growth mindset, empathy, cultural competence and hope. We believe that our students and our staff will benefit greatly from this curriculum. Please watch this short video for more information: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8sOzgIaWaU0

At the elementary level (K-4) I also go into classrooms once a month to do guidance lessons on other topics such as making new friends, kindness, bullying and more. In grades 5-8, 9-12, I do lessons on stress, decision making, addiction, careers, assertiveness, and more.
