Sight word reading is those all-important and frequently used words which can be hard or tricky to sound out or spell phonetically. Developing an quick recognition of these words will give your child's reading a boost and help him/her to gain confidence and fluency. Learning the words from flashcards or lists can be a bit boring or mundane, so using games whether interactive or hands-on will help children to have fun and learn sight words almost effortlessly. Sight words are also sometimes called high frequency words, Dolch words, or Fry words. Below you will find a Google Slideshow that reviews each level of words that were compiled by Edward William Dolch, PhD. There are about 220 words that are most commonly found in everyday reading. To review the words, tap the flash card area or the forward arrow in the bottom right corner of the slideshow window. In addition, I've provided some links for you and your child to explore and practice reading sight words. Enjoy!
Practice sight words by looking for different characters. Choose a level and click the link for the Google Slide to open. Then have student(s) to read all words on the screen before choosing one word to click to see if they can find the hidden character. I have them use the word in a sentence to also practice vocabulary and sentence skills.
