About the Teacher: Mrs. Berra

Hello & Welcome! My name is Laura Berra. I have been teaching string orchestra classes for over 13 years. My students have been elementary through high school musicians. My main instrument is the cello. During the normal school year, I am the orchestra director at Mesquite Junior High School. Materials List- (all strings classes)

Instrument (violin, viola, cello, or bass) of the correct size, professionally set-up to be playable.
Bow and case (should come with the instrument if you are renting)
Rosin
Violin and viola players need a Shoulder Rest (recommended: Everest Brand)
Small, soft cloth to keep in your case
Pencil
Folder or binder for music

How do I get an instrument for my child?

I generally recommend that beginning to intermediate students rent an instrument rather than buying. Local music stores rent out instruments that are easy to play and tune. Your local store can also insure that you have the right size instrument that will not cause injury and often offers insurance to cover anything that can go wrong with the instrument. When looking for a store to rent from, ask whether they have a "luthier" (violin repair specialist) on staff.

If you are considering purchasing an instrument, please don't hesitate to contact me for info & recommendations. There are many factory-made instruments out there that are notoriously difficult to tune and difficult to play. Purchasing one will waste your money and frusterate your young musician.

Final Concert-

There will be an informal concert the last day of Summer School Strings (more information to follow). Student dress for this concert will be a school shirt with long jeans or pants (no rips).
