Highland High School opened in 1993. The band program has an enrollment of over 400 students which make up the 4 concert bands & 4 jazz bands that meet year-round, a competitive marching band with 150 performers, two woodwind choirs, and two competitive winter guards. The band program provides an outstanding music education and creates positive learning experiences for Highland's student musicians. The concert, jazz, and marching bands consistently receive superior ratings in festivals and competitions in Arizona and all over the Southwest.
The Highland Wind Ensemble has been an Honored Performer at the Arizona Music Education Association State Conference in 2010 and the Highland Jazz Band II Black was an Honored Performer in 2013 & 2015. The Highland Marching Band has marched in two nationally televised parades: The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in 2004 and the Tournament of Roses Parade on New Year's day in 2001. In addition, the marching band has been in the top division in Arizona for over 25 consecutive years and was the first band ever to win the ABODA Division I State Marching Band Championships in 2009 and was State Champion of AzMBA in 2016. The Highland/ASU Jazz Festival has been supporting jazz education in Arizona for 11 years. Highland also supports the only United Sound Jazz Band Program in the United States.
