Gila Martow was elected as the Ward 5 City Councillor in 2022 and is now the candidate for re-election. A proud, 38-year resident of Thornhill, originally moving to the area from Montreal, Gila and her husband, Jeff, chose Thornhill as the perfect place to plant roots, build a life, and raise their family.
As a devoted mother to her four children, Evan, Josh, Mitch, and Jennie, Gila understands firsthand the values, priorities, and unique charm that make our neighbourhood such an incredible place to live. Her decades of deep roots in Thornhill drive her unwavering commitment to protecting our community’s quality of life and ensuring local government works directly for families like yours.
Before entering public service, Gila spent almost three decades serving her community as a trusted healthcare professional. Her extensive clinical experience as an Optometrist gave her a unique appreciation for patient-centred care, attentive listening, and real-world problem-solving skills that seamlessly transitioned into her political career.
Gila was elected as the Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) for Thornhill, serving from 2014 until 2022. During her tenure at Queen’s Park, she built a reputation as a principled trailblazer and a fierce advocate for her constituents. Key achievements from her time as MPP include:
Securing the Subway Extension: Gila championed the vital infrastructure funding needed to bring the subway line directly into Thornhill, paving the way for better connectivity.
Standing Against Discrimination: She successfully introduced and passed a historic, landmark legislative resolution rejecting the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) campaign against Israel.
Advocating for Healthcare Workers: Drawing on her medical background, she remained a steadfast provincial champion and voice for Ontario's Optometrists and frontline eye care providers.
In 2022, Gila chose not to run for a fourth term as an MPP, opting instead to pivot her energy entirely to local municipal governance. Believing that the strongest impact starts right at the grass-roots level, she focused her sights entirely on serving her home community at Vaughan City Hall.
In October 2022, the residents of Ward 5 elected Gila with a mandate for change. Since stepping into office, she has brought her characteristic prudence, high energy, and fiscal accountability to municipal chambers.
Gila actively shapes local policy and represents taxpayers across a wide array of municipal files. Her key city positions and committee roles include:
Chair of the JCC Vaughan Maccabi 2026 Games Committee
Chair of the Inclusion and Community Outreach Advisory Committee
Chair of the Accessibility Advisory Committee
Member of the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre (VMC) Sub-Committee
Member of the Vaughan Public Library Board
Member of the Vaughan Tourism Board
Gila continues to work tirelessly every single day to ensure Ward 5 remains a vibrant, accessible, safe, and prosperous place to live, work, and raise a family.
