Talk about math! Make up simple mental math problems about what you are doing. For example:

Ask your child, "If we picked 20 apples and used 8 to make a pie, how many apples do we have left?"

At the grocery store..."Boxes of cereal are 4/$10. How much is one box of cereal?" "How much would it cost if we bought 8 boxes?"

Going to the movies? Ask your child to figure out how much it will cost for the tickets if it costs $8 for each adult and $5 for each child.

With my own children, I used to keep a stack of flash cards in our van. On a trip to Tops, they would quiz me on the facts. They would ask me 8 x 7, I would answer and they would check to see if I did it correctly. It was a chance for them to read the facts and hear the answers! A quick trip to the store gave us 5 minutes of practice on the way!

Keep a stack of flash cards in your family room. When the commercials are on during their favorite show, turn the tv on mute and have them read through the cards. Read the entire fact out loud. "7 x 6 = 42". That's 2 minutes of practice during each commercial break!
