As a sustainability initiative, our IT department are embarking on project with our old staff laptops which cannot be maintained in our IT network services.

These laptops are still working fine but cannot cope with the demands of upgrading them to use MS Windows 10/11. As an initiative, instead of disposing these laptops, we have installed Linux OS with the Destros package Ubuntu. By installing theses, the laptops again have a sense of purpose that can be used as extra classroom laptops or loaned out to students who have not got any PC, Laptop or Tablet to work on at home.

By using Linux, its a 'less' resource heavy Operating System with Open-Source software which are equivalent to today's Off The Self/Closed -Source software programmes such as MS Office.

With Linux, you just need a browser to continue to work - as you can access your Google School Account and you can carry on working via a classroom or at home.

Going foreward, we are looking into converting 5 laptops with Linux/Ubuntu by the end of the adacemic year.
