Results & conclusion

Results

My results showed that the tap water worked best out of all the other water types when growing the plants. Although tap water worked best, recycled water worked almost just as well. The plants that were water with tap water grew taller than the other seedlings which were watered with recycled and bottled water. The tap water plants grew to 23.2cm, recycled water grew to 21.88cm, and the bottled water plants grew to 19.81cm. It should be noted that some of the beans in each section of plants did not start sprouting until more than a week into the experiment.

Conclusion

The purpose of my project was to find out if recycled water, bottled water, or tap water works best when growing plants. My hypothesis, which was that tap water would work the best, ended up working best. The plants under tap water grew the tallest, recycled water plants second tallest, and bottled water plants the shortest. At the very beginning of the experiment when the pinto beans were just starting to sprout, the recycled water plants were the tallest, but then the tap water plants caught up and passed them in height towards the end of the project.

I think that the tap water worked best because it came from the rain, which has more natural nutrients than processed water from a bottle. I think it worked better then the recycled water because the recycled water also had traces of soap, dirt, and detergent because it was from a washing machine.

Some sources of error in this experiment were that one day I forgot to write down the height of the plants that day and on a different day one of my parents moved the plants into direct sunlight which made all of them wilt and not go back to their old height until the next day.

The reason why I think this study is important is that if you live in a dry community without any water to spare and own a garden or grow plants, you can recycle water and use that to help grow your own plants. This could also help farmers use less water when growing their crops and reduce the amount of waste water that goes into the ocean.

Further studies could investigate the temperature or the type of soil used affects the way a plant grows.
