GPS Newsletter

This week we began our new project, 'All About me'. The children have been learning new vocabulary around the topic such as 'relatives, hobby, favourite' and discussing our families and learning to describe (tell me more) about them . They have been showing wonderful progress in both their name recognition, name building as well as name writing for some. In Mathematics we have been learning to match and sort objects using everyday items and learning how we can identify different rules and techniques for sorting. In art, we have fun learning about primary and secondary colours, exploring mixing in different sensory activities. The children have been challenging themselves physically, learning to hop, balance, jump with two legs together and roll.

Wow, what a busy and fun week we've had in Year 1 this week. In English we started the story 'We're going on a Bear hunt'. The children have thoroughly enjoyed retelling the story through small world play and putting on a puppet show for their freinds.  We even went on our very own sensory bear hunt in the school hall, where the children got to explore the different settings. In maths we have been learning to represent numbers in many different ways and have been counting objects from a larger group. We continued our IPC topic 'A day in the life' and the children were busy interviewing different members of staff to find out their role in our school. In Phonics, we have been super busy learning lots of new sounds with monster phonics, which the children are loving. 

This week we have been learning about the character's thoughts and feelings in The gingerbread man and the children did a roleplay of acting out the story. In Maths we have been comparing and ordering numbers. In Science we went outdoors to explore different microhabitats and the children were excited to discover the minibeasts living in them. We are continuing our topic of A day in the life in IPC and this week the children learned about the different jobs involved in creating a tv show. 

Year 3 have had another fantastic week! They further investigated plants and created their very own 'Life cycle stages of a sunflower' using various arts and crafts. For English they took a deeper look into the story of 'Jack and the Beanstalk', where they sequenced the story, acted out scenes and came up with similes and adjectives to describe the book characters. In Maths they did an amazing job placing numbers up to 1,000, as well as estimating different values on a number line. 

Year 5 had a fantastic week. In Science, we discussed what we need to plant and how to plant a seed. Following each step, the children planted their very own sunflower seed. Year 5 are very excited to watch the seed grow. In English,  we have started looking at a diary and its features. The children have begun planning a diary entry from Sophie's (a character in the BFG)  point of view. In Maths, we have looked at the power of 10 and 10, 100, 1,000, 10,000, 100,000 more and less than given numbers. The children were fantastic at solving the number problems. 

This week has seen students in English learning about conjunctions, and co ordinating adjectives that we can instill in our children as writers booklet. In math's we have worked on our BODMAS and Multi step word problems learning about the vocabulary words that help us understand the functions to use when solving our problems. In IPC we are covering anti bullying posters and techniques of how to guide others and ourselves when things go wrong.  We have now started our new topic in Science which includes classifying animals within their categories according to their features.

This week we did so many activities in which students also started practising in writing skills in Spanish by writing greetings and their names in Spanish to make them more confident fluent  along with singing songs in the class .  We will do more fun and activity based on Spanish in coming week .

It's a fun week for everyone in our STREAM class in GPS! The children in FS created robots from recyclables and craft materials as we continued our topic in IEYC My Toy Shop. Years 1 and 2 made paper puppets of who they wanted to be when they grew up. This week, years 3 and 4 have been busy planning in groups how to construct their model vehicle representing different historical periods. Year 5 was engaged in planning for their stop motion animation using cut-out papers which they will start filming next week. Years 7 and 8 learned the importance of emotions in art and how artists convey their feelings through their works. They enjoyed creating a digital drawing of their emotion using their technology skills and their creativity in arts.
