PK-6 Best in Show

"Sunrise" by Angelina Nguyen, 5th Grade

Mitchell Elementary School

Instructor: Suzanne Fauria

"This is a redrawn art piece that I created when I was eight years old. I decided to redraw it to help improve my skills in art. It took me a few days to finish, but was worth it in the end. If you really want to improve, you have to push yourself in as many ways as possible."

7-8 Best in Show

"Unprecedented" by Jaelin Louise Tabaniag, 8th Grade

Alamitos Intermediate School
Instructor: John Patzold

"My inspiration for this piece comes from my older brother and a streamer I was watching at the time. My brother will be graduating high school this year, and due to Covid 19 he’s afraid he won’t have a proper graduation. Additionally, the boy in my art piece closely resembles the streamer I was watching. The materials I used were HB, 2B, 4B, 6B pencils, along with a blending stump and different sized erasers."

9-12 Best in Show

"One Wear" by Rocio Arroyo-Salceda, 11th Grade

La Quinta High School
Instructor: Gina Zahm

"The theme for this project was realism. To fully capture all the details and reflect the look of an actual shoe, I used one of my sister’s sneakers as reference. In addition to using an actual shoe as reference, to reflect realism onto clay, I cut out several slabs of clay in an appropriate life size, I then molded the clay with my hands, added additional clay to add the organic wrinkles of a real shoe, and finally used household items like a toothpick to recreated the texture of fabric. Further, I got inspired to name this project “One Wear” because my sister wore the actual shoe only once back in 2019 and never wore it since."

President of the School Board Award

"Giraffe" by Savanna Perez, 1st Grade

Woodbury Elementary School

Instructor: Jennifer Townsend

"I looked at pictures of giraffes. I used oil pastels. I liked using oil pastels."

Superintendent's Award

"Silenced" by Danny Nguyen, 12th Grade

Rancho Alamitos High School

Instructor: Julia Mobasseri

"This piece depicts a personification of selective mutism or social anxiety. It was created mostly using graphite with some charcoal in the darker areas to increase contrast. For fine details, a 0.7 mechanical pencil was used and the blending and smudging was done with a tortillion."

Mayor's Award

"Self Portrait" by Jenna Barre, 12th Grade

Pacifica High School

Instructor: Sheila Colcord

"This painting was made using acrylic paint and heavy gesso for texture. It’s a self portrait reflecting how I visualize all of my creative thoughts. They are always being expressed and they are an intrinsic part of who I am and how I see the world. Sometimes these ideas are really abstract, but it all leads me to a very open way of expressing myself and that’s how I view this painting."

"Soul Flower" by Samantha Pleitez, 8th Grade

Fitz Intermediate

Instructor: Kelly Sneddon

"Growing up my mother always had gardens of roses and different types of flowers. She inspired me to do something meaningful that represented us as a family and how much we enjoy growing life. I just wanted to give some of that joy back to all those that see my art."
