Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by persistent patterns of inattention and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity that interfere with functioning or development. It can include difficulties with sustaining attention, organization, and mental effort, as well as excessive movement and impulsivity.
Types of ADHD:
Predominantly inattentive presentation: difficulty staying focused, forgetfulness, disorganization.
Predominantly hyperactive/impulsive presentation: mostly trouble with restlessness and self-control.
Combined presentation: a mix of both.
Most people are diagnosed as kids, though some aren’t diagnosed until adulthood. ADHD is one of the most common childhood disorders in the United States.
ADHD is NOT a motivation problem or caused by poor parenting—
it's about how the brain manages attention, activity level, and self‑control.
Common Signs of ADHD:
Trouble paying attention or staying on task
Difficulty following instructions
Fidgeting or moving constantly
Acting without thinking (impulsivity)
Challenges with organization and completing tasks
Emotional ups and downs
How ADHD May Affect Daily Life
At school: trouble finishing work, distractibility, or needing frequent reminders.
At home: difficulty following routines, forgetting chores, meltdowns when frustrated.
With peers: trouble waiting turns, blurting out, or struggling to keep friends.
Helping Your Child Thrive
Create structure: consistent routines, clear rules, and visual reminders.
Use positive reinforcement: praise efforts, not just results.
Break tasks down: give one or two instructions at a time.
Encourage movement breaks: let them use energy in healthy ways.
Collaborate with teachers: share strategies that work at home.
Behavioral therapy: teaches children skills for managing impulses and emotions.
Parent training: helps families learn effective strategies.
Medication: sometimes recommended as part of treatment.
School supports: ongoing communication with teachers, accommodations through 504 or IEP plans, as needed.
