The strongest workshops focus on one or two themes. Trying to fix communication, trust, decision-making and leadership in a single afternoon usually means none of them gets proper attention. Pick the main behaviour the team needs to change, then design around it.
Communication: how information is shared, checked and handed over.
Trust: whether people feel able to rely on one another.
Problem-solving: how the team approaches unclear or complex tasks.
Decision-making: who decides, how quickly, and how decisions are communicated.
Collaboration after change: rebuilding working habits after a restructure or merger.
Leadership alignment: getting managers to pull in the same direction.
Psychological safety: whether people feel safe to speak up, ask questions and admit mistakes.
Ask the manager or HR partner to describe what is actually happening at work. Are handovers being dropped? Do meetings end without decisions? Are new team members staying quiet? A concrete description points to the right theme far better than a general wish for the team to work better together.
Before choosing activities, decide whether the session is mainly about morale, behaviour change, leadership alignment or team problem-solving. That choice changes the activity, the room setup, the facilitator's role, the depth of the debrief and the time needed for action planning.
A good brief includes the headcount, who is in the room, venue status, available time, leadership context, any recent changes in the team and the behaviour you want to improve. A workshop for new managers should not be designed the same way as an all-staff bonding session or a senior leadership offsite.
