Two teams with the same objective can need very different programmes. A young sales team and a long-serving finance department will respond differently to the same race. Before choosing, build a short profile of the group.
Small teams suit intimate formats where everyone participates directly, such as escape rooms, cooking challenges or creative workshops. Medium groups can handle competitive formats with rotation between stations. Very large groups need parallel streams, a strong emcee and tight logistics so nobody waits around. Tell your provider the realistic attendance, not the invitation list.
Ask quietly whether anyone has mobility needs, medical conditions or is pregnant. Build the programme so every role has a seated or low-exertion option that still matters to the team result. Indoor venues are usually easier to make step-free and comfortable.
Is the group used to working together, or meeting for the first time?
Will senior leaders join as participants or observers?
Are there language preferences or cultural sensitivities to respect?
Do people enjoy competition, or would a cooperative format suit them better?
New teams often do well with formats that require natural collaboration without relying on existing relationships, such as a race through the city or a cooking challenge. Established teams may get more from a workshop that tackles a real working problem.
A half-day programme is usually enough for focused team building. A full day works if it includes lunch and a proper debrief. Avoid ending so late that people struggle with the commute home, and think about the time of day: high-energy outdoor tasks are kinder in the morning.
Ask the provider to weave company values or current priorities into the challenge content, scoring and debrief questions. That small step turns a generic game into something that feels designed for your team.
