Combat archery is designed to be accessible, but it is still a physical, competitive game. A little planning ensures that everyone stays safe and that the session works for people of different fitness levels and comfort with competition.
Eye protection is worn at all times on the field.
Only foam-tipped arrows provided by the operator are used.
Players stay within marked boundaries.
Facilitators can stop play immediately with a clear signal.
No aiming at heads, and no shooting at close range beyond what the rules allow.
Damaged equipment is removed straight away.
Ask your operator to explain their rules and how facilitators enforce them.
Send a short note before the day explaining what combat archery involves, what to wear and what the safety rules are. Suggest comfortable sports clothing and covered shoes. Ask participants to let you know privately about any health conditions or injuries.
Not everyone wants to be in the thick of the action. Offer roles such as team captain, strategist, scorekeeper or medic in the Zombie format, so people can take part at their own level. Make it clear that sitting out a round is fine.
Rotate teams through rounds so everyone gets meaningful play time. Avoid formats where the same strong players are always on the field while others wait.
Running and ducking in Singapore's climate is tiring. Build in water breaks, provide shade for those waiting and keep rounds short. Watch for signs of fatigue.
Brief the group that the goal is fun and teamwork, not settling scores. A good emcee sets this tone and keeps the competition light.
A safe, inclusive session is the one people remember for the right reasons.
