Strokes gained is a newer golf statistic created by Columbia Professor, Mark Broadie. It can be used to analyze a player's performance compared to a benchmark. The benchmarks can be combined and vary depending on what the user wants to analyze. Common benchmarks are: team/league/friends, skill level, course, or event.
Strokes gained is the only golf statistic that exists that can properly measure your game and team performance.
Current commonly used golf statistics fail to account for the most important variable in golf, DISTANCE. For example, Golfer A hits a fairway in regulation with 200 yards left to the pin and Golfer B hits a drive that rolled into the rough with 100 yards left to the pin. Golfer A has achieved a "FIR", but will on average take more shots to finish the hole from 200 yards away compared to Golfer B from 100 yards away.
A similar example can be used for the Green in Regulation statistics. Golfer A hits the green in regulation, but has 50+ft remaining and a severe downhill putt. Golfer B was just short of the green and has a short uphill chip to get up and down. Which golfer will finish in less shots on average?
