Peter and the Starcatcher
A play by Rick Elise
"To have faith is to have wings."
Peter and the Starcatcher is a play about the magic we create through connection with others. My Goal with this play was to instill the audience with childlike wonder and to solidify the fact that, to a child, anything is possible. The production statement for our production given to me by my director was "Victorian Storybook."
I had the opportunity to free my imagination and create whimsical puppets and objects that still served the needs of the production. For example, I knew that the yellow bird should not look like a "normal bird" that exists in the real world. I purposely made the neck very long and the wings very short to give the illusion of a creature found in a storybook. At one point in the show, the bird had to be knocked from its string and stuffed into a top hat. To achieve this, I made the bird out of a moldable felt and attached magnets at the connection points where the bird attached to the string. The bird could easily be disconnected and placed in the hat without compromising for size.
