The Hudson Mathematics Colloquium began in the 1980's on the Armstrong campus. It was the brainchild of Dr. Anne Hudson, who wanted to provide an opportunity for mathematics students and faculty to share a light lunch and an engaging talk about mathematics. Dr. Hudson's taco salad became a mainstay of this luncheon colloquium series, as were talks, by students as well as faculty, that are accessible to a wide range of undergraduate students. (Among her many achievements before her retirement from Armstrong in 1997, Dr. Hudson coached U.S. mathematical olympiad teams, coached an Armstrong Putnam team that featured a Putnam scholar, and was named a national teacher of the year by the Mathematical Association of America.)
The Hudson Mathematics Colloquium continues to meet, and is intended for a broad audience, including undergraduate math students and non-experts. Colloquium talks include (but are not limited to) an introduction to a particular mathematical subject, a survey of open problems, a collection of the speaker's favorite theorems and proofs about a particular topic, and a discussion of the speaker's research results, particularly if in collaboration with students.
