The collection is housed in an amazing new facility. The large wet storage room (1350 square feet) has ample room to house herpetology, ichthyology, and teaching collections, as well as the Grey Reef Marine Invertebrate Collection. Three computers are available for research, data entry, and cataloguing, as well as a Datamax thermal printer. Research grade balances, Zeiss stereomicroscope, and Leica M80 boom arm dissecting scope with EC3 camera are also available. Visiting are welcome and encouraged, just contact the curator.
Thanks to NSF funding, the Collection was completely re-curated between 2009 and 2013. Each specimen was removed from it's jar and re-identified, given a new tag and catalog number, and properly stored in new preservative in a new jar. Also, all data entered into a curatorial management software system (Specify), rather than using paper records. As you can see from these photos, some containers were old pickle jars curators were able to re-purpose for scientific specimens. At least two dozen different undergraduate and graduate students worked on this massive undertaking over four years.
