Transition Planning
5th to 6th Grade Planning
Planning for the transition to middle school starts every year in January. Middle school counselors visit the elementary campus to walk 5th grade students through choosing classes for their 6th grade year.
Middle School Course Requirements:
3 years of Math, Language Arts, Science, & Social Studies
2 years of Physical Education
1 year of a Fine Art
6th to 7th Grade / 7th to 8th grade planning
Transition planning for future 7th & 8th grade students begins during the spring semester. 7th & 8th grade students currently get 2 electives in their schedule and have the opportunity to begin taking high school credit classes. Check out the flyer for information about classes we offer BEYOND the fine arts classes offered in 6th grade.
8th to 9th Grade (High School Planning)
High school transition planning is a long process that starts early (sometimes as early as October of the 8th grade year) with discussions about career interests and high school endorsements / career pathways. Students will have opportunities to get information about different high school programs such as culinary, NJROTC, and much more. As the parent, these are some things you should be aware of:
All 8th grade students will fill out a Personal Graduation Plan (PGP) that maps out their plan for high school. The purpose of the PGP is for students to have a plan for how they will meet the requirements to be able to graduate. We recognize that plans can change, so the most important thing is making sure they are happy with their 9th grade course selections.
The middle school counselors will be meeting with 8th grade students one-on-one in the spring semester to finalize their PGP and 9th grade course selections, and to enter it into Skyward. You will still have an opportunity to make changes after this prior to your student starting high school.
Graduation requirements for students from Georgetown ISD includes 4 credits of each of the core areas (math, ELA, science, & social studies), 2 credits of a foreign language, 1 credit of a fine art, 1 credit of physical education, and 1/2 credit of health. All Georgetown ISD students will also complete at least one endorsement.
