School Health Advisory Council (SHAC)
The School Health Advisory Council (SHAC) is a group of individuals representative of segments of the community. They provide advice on coordinated school health programming and its impact on student health and learning. This committee addresses areas including health education, physical education and activity, health services, nutrition services, counseling, psychological, and social services, healthy school environment, staff health and wellness, and family and community involvement. The SHAC provides recommendations and advice to the school district Board of Trustees on these topics.Texas law requires that every school district have a SHAC and the majority of members must be parents not employed by the school district. The details of the responsibilities of a SHAC are outlined in the statute published in the Texas Education Code.
