Muriel Statman is a Research Coordinator in the Tercyak Health Behavior and Cancer Prevention Lab at Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center. Her research endeavors cover a broad spectrum of topics, with a primary focus on cancer prevention and risk management. In her role, Muriel manages research participants, conducts data analysis, and contributes to scholarly publications and conference presentations. She also oversees lab operations and serves as a mentor to undergraduate research assistants.
Muriel coordinates Georgetown's Young Scholars Program, which provides no-cost field trips for students from underrepresented backgrounds to engage in hands-on learning about cancer biology and control, promoting their interest in STEM careers. Additionally, as the Program Assistant for the Interventions for Managing Parenting and Cancer Team (IMPACT), she supports research aimed at enhancing the quality of life and psychosocial outcomes for families affected by cancer. Muriel has led focus groups with co-parents and adult children of parents with cancer to understand their unique support needs, helping to inform future programming at Georgetown Lombardi.
Muriel joined the Tercyak Lab in July 2024 after graduating Phi Beta Kappa from Emory University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry and Sociology. As an undergraduate, Muriel conducted breast cancer research at the Rollins School of Public Health and Winship Cancer Institute, specifically focusing on ameliorating racial disparities in breast cancer risk and outcomes. Muriel plans to attend medical school and pursue a career in oncology and public health.
