Dr. Anke-Hilse Maitland-van der Zee

University Medical Centre, Amsterdam, Netherlands

Maitland-van der Zee was educated as a pharmacist, clinical pharmacologist and epidemiologist. She obtained her PhD at Utrecht University in 2003, and worked as a postdoc in the Human Genetics Center, University of Texas, Houston Tx, USA from 2003-2005. From 2005-2016 she worked at the division of Pharmacoepidemiology and Clinical Pharmacology of Utrecht University first as an assistant-Professor and later as an associate-Professor of Personalized Medicine. In 2016 she became a full professor of Precision Medicine in Respiratory disease at the Academic Medical Center (AMC) in Amsterdam. She is also head of the research group at the Respiratory Medicine department and of the Pediatric Respiratory Medicine and Allergy department in the AMC. Her current research focusses on patient-, environmental characteristics and molecular biomarkers (genome, epigenome, transcriptome, microbiome, metabolome) that can predict the optimal treatment for the individual patient with respiratory disease. Maitland-van der Zee is the PI of several large (international) studies. She is the vice-president of the European Association of Systems Medicine (EASYM), the president of the Federation Innovative Drug Research in the Netherlands (FIGON), she is secretary/treasurer of the Netherlands Society of Clinical Pharmacology and Biopharmacy (NVKFB) and the president of the Netherlands Respiratory Society (NRS). She has published >200 peer reviewed articles, she delivered 13 PhD fellows and 17 are currently working under her supervision. She obtained many research grants from governmental, charity and industrial funds.

Session 1: SYSTEMS/NETWORK MEDICINE IN CLINICAL PRACTICE

Day 2: September 12, 2019 | Session 1 | 10:40 AM - 11:00 AM

Precision Medicine in Respiratory Disease. Are We Beyond Fiction?

Anke-Hilse Maitland-Van der Zee, PhD, University Medical Centre, Amsterdam, Netherlands.

Respiratory diseases are common, complex, multifaceted diseases. Asthma for example, comprises of multiple phenotypes, which might benefit from treatment with different types of therapies. Understanding the underlying biological mechanisms of these phenotypes by using different omics methods such as (epi)genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, microbiomics and exposomics will help to apply precision medicine approaches in clinical practice. In this talk I will give some examples of single –omics techniques (genetics, metabolomics in exhaled breath) where clinical implementation might be possible soon. Furthermore, I will discuss future possibilities and challenges of using multi-omics approaches in respiratory disease.

Session 3: ETHICS AND EDUCATIONAL CONSIDERATIONS IN THE ERA OF PRECISION MEDICINE

DAY 2: September 12, 2019 | Session CO-CHAIR | 3:30 PM - 5:00 PM

Anke-Hilse Maitland-Van der Zee, PhD, University Medical Centre, Amsterdam, Netherlands.
