When beginning to conduct informational interviews, start with second-year, full-time MBA students who interned with the firm or students who have work experience at the firm, then first/second-year associates, then managers/senior managers, and finally partners and managing directors. You will gradually build firm and industry knowledge and will be positioned to make the strongest impression on senior decision makers at the firm.
Firms commonly track you from your first interactions with the organization. Firm representatives and alumni visit campus and meet with students to identify top talent long before the formal resume submission. Every conversation counts!
Students with an international development focus have several options for engagement through student clubs:
Emerging Markets Network (EMN) aims to promote an understanding of emerging markets and facilitate a network of global-minded individuals for promising careers in international business and emerging markets. This club organizes the Emerging Markets Network Career Day.
The Georgetown McDonough Net Impact Club organizes Career Treks and a Career Day related to careers that promote socially responsible business. The Social Impact Internship Fund (SIIF) aims to raise funds and award scholarships to support MBA students who are pursuing unpaid or minimally paid internships in social impact organizations.
The Georgetown Energy and Cleantech Club brings together students and alumni from across the Georgetown community who are interested in issues related to energy (traditional and renewable sources), climate change, cleantech, and sustainability. This group organizes several Energy treks and the Energy Career Day.
Career Days are informational, “day-in-the-life” events with a specific industry or functional focus, including Marketing, Healthcare, Finance, Consulting, Entrepreneurship, Operations, and Energy. Students who participate in Career Days have the chance to discover new career paths and opportunities in their area of interest. Co-organized by the Student Organizations and Industry Practice Leaders, Career Days typically are scheduled on Fridays during the fall semester. Alumni and recruiters participate through panels, keynotes, roundtable discussions, or networking receptions.
The Energy and Clean Tech Club and the Emerging Markets Network (EMN) co-host the Georgetown Emerging Markets and Energy Career Day in the fall.
Net Impact Career Day is typically held in November. Contact the Net Impact Club for details
Student site visits to employer workplaces offer a unique supplement to the traditional on-campus information session, allowing you to directly experience an employer’s workplace culture and interface with key executives. Advantages of participating in a trek include:
• Students observe the organization and culture first-hand.
• Treks allow students to position themselves as a select group of focused MBAs who have a demonstrated interested in the employer’s organization.
• Treks are offered in a variety of locations throughout the year, allowing you to take advantage of multiple opportunities and experience a variety of business locales.
Based on student interest, the Emerging Markets Network (EMN) in conjunction with the Energy and Cleantech Club and the Net Impact Club, may organize one day treks during Fall Break and minitreks on Fridays in the Washington, D.C. metro area throughout the school year. Previous employer participants include the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the Inter-American Development Bank (IaDB), Dalberg Global Development Advisors, FINCA International, and the US International Development Finance Corporation (DFC).
Remember, you can also partner with your MBA Career Coach to organize your own trek to meet your specific career goals.
