The GU-Q Iranian Society was founded on February 15 2022 by Zahra Saboorzadeh and Mohammad Jaski. Mehran Kamrava, a professor, serves as the club's adviser.
The Iranian Society is the first established club for Iranians in GU-Q. Because Iranians made up a small minority at GU-Q, Zahra and Mohammad started this club in order to illuminate the beauty of Iranian culture to their peers.
Given Iran's prominent role in Georgetown's coursework and its involvement in many classes, our goal is to introduce Persian culture and traditions, explaining their origins and significance. We plan to facilitate in-depth dialogues and discussions on significant historical and contemporary topics. This includes exploring the ancient Persian empires, their contributions to art, science, and governance, and their lasting impact on modern civilization. The club will provide an excellent opportunity to educate everyone about Persian customs and rituals, showcasing the rich and diverse culture to both students and faculty.
We plan to host events celebrating Iranian heritage, such as Nowruz and Yalda, featuring traditional music, dance, and food. We also plan to hold discussions on topics like ancient Persian empires, its long-lasting traditions, and Qatar-Iran relations. Our aim is to create a platform that not only showcases the beauty and richness of Persian culture but also fosters a deeper understanding of Iran's historical legacy and current geopolitical significance. Through these events and discussions, we hope to enrich the Georgetown community's appreciation of Persian culture and encourage thoughtful conversations about its global influence.
