About

History

Established in 2014

Al-Liwan was part of the traditional Qatari house and an integral part of the architecture. Al-Liwan served as an essential part of the Qatari home by functioning as a gathering place for family members on a daily basis. Although the existence of a ‘Liwan’ has shifted today with the modernization of Qatari homes, the ‘Liwan’ still continues to exist in a different architectural design yet, pertaining to its symbolic nature of getting family and friends together.

To connect the definition of Al-Liwan to the club's mission and vision we perceive the club as a home for all students in GU-Q. It is a club that allows us to gather together to explore the local culture that we are constantly exposed to.

Who we are

Al-Liwan Club is an inclusive club. It aims to host members from all over the world. The club members over the years were not limited to Qatari students. Al-Liwan serves as a hub for all students living in Qatar and is part of the Georgetown Qatar Campus.

To join Al-Liwan you do not need any prior experience or background. All we want from you is to be active members of the club by sharing your ideas and experiences, so that we can come together and host events for the wider community. Al-Liwan is mostly known for its Qatar National Day (QND) event which takes place every year.

For the academic year of 2021-2022, the club President is Shaikha Al-Obaidan and the club Vice President is Asma Al-Kuwari. Both of us are Juniors. Shaikha is a Culture and Politics major and Asma is an International Economics major. Both of us are taking these roles because we see the importance of Al-Liwan as part of the Georgetown Qatar community, and we both have been active members of the club since our freshmen year.
