8th Graders Travel to BGSU for Women in STEM Day 2019

In late October, a group of 8th grade girls attended the annual Women in STEM Day at Bowling Green State University. The young Comets expressed interest in one of more of the following fields: Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics. (STEM). The day was filled with hands-on activities, Guest Speakers, discussion and FUN!

Topics for the day included:

Radiation--they made glow in the dark "fireflies."

Microplants--they started their own mini urban garden.

Engineering--Marble Run Challenge--Tristan, Averi, and Paige won the challenge!

Thanks to Mrs. Bundy for organizing and helping our students grow. Go COMETS!

8th Grade Studies The Outsiders

Can you see the sunset from you side of town?

Our 8th graders studied the classic adolescent novel, The Outsiders, written by S.E. Hinton. Who doesn't remember the lines spoken by some of the most memorable characters in literature? "Stay Gold, Ponyboy." "Need a haircut, Greaser?" and more.

As a creative way to close the unit, GMS students "Greased up" or "Soced up" for the day and competed in a variety of games designed to deepen students' understanding of the struggles on growing up during the time of the novel and parallel them to the challenges of growing up today.

Socs vs. Grease completed in games of physical, mental, and teamwork challenges. The day concluded with a reflection on the theme of the day and a "theater" screening of the film in our auditorium.

While Ponyboy Curtis was reflecting on Paul Newman and a ride home when his story ends, our students gained a better understanding of much more. Stay Gold GMS, Stay Gold.
