The beauty of the world lies in the diversity of its people, which is what makes celebrating International Week at our school a beautiful and memorable event. At WSR - being a fully inclusive school community with people from over 68 nations of the world - we embrace diversity and multiculturalism. And by doing so, we provide our students with boundless opportunities to learn about different countries, traditions and culture, hereby expanding their emotional and intellectual horizons. Also, by being a part of a multilingual and multicultural community, students learn to develop an understanding of the perspective of children from different backgrounds hence equipping themselves with the necessary inter-personal relationship skills required to excel in a multi-cultural and multi-ethnic environment.

As languages form the major intrinsic part of cultural identity, International Mother Language Celebration has being the main highlight of the week. The purpose of celebrating this global event is to promote the awareness of language and cultural diversity within our school. In the course of the week, students have taken part in various International Mother Language activities, such as:

  • Learning to introduce themselves in at least 5 new languages.

  • Creating a banner saying “Hello” in 5 or more languages.

  • Learning a new song in 5 different languages.

  • Learning to count from one to five in as many languages as possible.

Another highlight of the week was the grand finale of our first ever virtual sports day – WSR Virtual Fitness Fest. The preliminary rounds were held during P.E lessons, where interested students were given the opportunity to take part in various fitness challenge activities. Thereafter, outstanding students in each category were selected to take part in the finals rounds with exciting sporting activities such as: flamingo pose, steam squat, obstacle jumps and so on. Winners in all categories will be recognised and celebrated during assemblies and also rewarded with amazing prizes.

On a final note, there is no doubt that our students have been impacted in multiple ways by this current global pandemic and as a school, we continue to place a high priority on the mental, emotional and social wellbeing of our students, which includes keeping them safe online. But as parents, it is extremely important that you continue to make conscious efforts towards ensuring the wellness of your children. Having a long conversation with them regularly will help them deal with the feeling of loneliness; encouraging them to engage in activities they love will help improve their mental health; and most importantly, providing them with well-balanced meals and making sure they get enough sleep will make them physically fit. In order to get the best out of our children, during and even after this pandemic, supporting their mental, emotional and social wellbeing is the key, and we all have a part to play.
